Music

Children in the early years are introduced to music through regular practical singing and music making games and activities. This invigorating and enabling approach instills a natural grasp of musical elements and an enthusiasm for music that is carried into Keystage 1.

During Years 2, 3 and 4 pupils develop their knowledge of the fundamental musical concepts of rhythm, melody, and harmony which they explore through singing, movement, percussion and performance. They begin to develop a vocabulary of musical terms and are introduced to a variety of instruments. Solfege is used extensively for ear training.

Practical music making is strongly encouraged at Abercorn. All year groups take part in the annual Christmas concert, and in school productions. In addition to curriculum classroom based music lessons, we also offer extra-curricular tuition in voice, piano, percussion, strings, wind, brass, guitar and music theory. Voice, percussion and music theory lessons are provided by Directors of Music Natalie Bath and Gideon Miller, all other lessons are provided by experienced peripatetic staff. All of our extra-curricular students are encouraged to perform at an annual music soiree.

The school runs a variety of ensembles. We have a number of vocal groups based on traditional, pop and jazz repertoires, which in recent years have performed at The Children’s Trust Concert at the Royal Academy of Music, The Christmas Lights ceremonies in Marylebone and Bond Street, and at the North London Music Festival. We also have a rock band and recorder ensemble and, depending on pupil availability, a chamber ensemble and percussion ensemble.

The music department is equipped with pianos, keyboards and guitars as well as a wide variety of tuned and un-tuned percussion.  We have a PA system and microphones for live shows and events, and have recently acquired a Digidesign MBox 2 which allows us to make high quality multi-track recordings.
