Year 2 RSPB bird day

On Thursday 26th January the Year 2's took part in the RSPB's Big Schools' Birdwatch. For one hour, between 10:10am and 11:10am, the children observed and recorded the different species of birds that either visited the garden or took food from the bird feeders. We placed seed, bread and berries on the ground for the garden eating birds such as Robins, Blackbirds, Wood Pigeons and Feral Pigeons. Our feeders helped attract a Blue Tit and Two Great Tits, and a Robin and Blackbird fed from the ground. The children observed in small groups of short, ten minute sessions and recorded the highest number of each species seen at any one time. Other birds observed were Feral Pigeons and Herring Gulls flying over. RSPB website to create a pie charts, bar graphs and pictograms.

Year 4 Indian food lesson

At the end of last term both Year Four classes had a 'delicious' lesson learning about Indian food as part of their Geography topic on Chembakolli. They smelt and sampled many different spices from the region including Turmeric, Corriander and Cumin. They also got to try some different foods including Samosas, Poppadoms and Bhajis. The lesson was enjoyed by all, trying new foods was a great experience and  it also helped to bring the Geography to life. everyone was brave and tried all the spices though some were left huffing and puffing as a result.

Reception trip to the IMAX and Tate Modern

On Tuesday 22nd November all of Reception visited the IMAX theatre to see the film Under the Sea 3D, followed by a visit to the Tate Modern. The children had a great time in the IMAX trying to reach out and touch the very realistic 3D sea creatures; there were a few scary moments but everyone was very brave.

The children then spent some time searching for art work during their very own "Tate Modern Treasure Hunt" and of course spent some time discussing a few of the pieces. Members of the public were very impressed with the insightful comments that the children were making - future art critics in the making prehaps? Thanks to all the  mums who helped out on the day, without your assistance trips such as this would just not be possible to do!

Year 8 Talk by Jake Meyer

Jake Meyer recently came to talk to our Year 8's and discuss his achievements and difficult tasks that he faced in climbing expeditions.

He is currently the world's youngest man to complete the 7 Summits challenge in which he climbed the highest mountain in every continent. This included climbing in Antarctica surviving temperatures of -70 degrees. At age 21, he climbed Mt. Everest in 2005 and made it to the summit after 64 days in the cold harsh conditions of the mountains with very little oxygen.

He started climbing at 15, climbing Kilimanjaro. It was a great talk and really motivated the students to make that little bit more effort in trying to achieve their goals. It was also great for showing the students the importance of teamwork as Jake had a 5 man team to help him reach the summits. As one of the students said, " it was truly an amazing and inspirational presentation!"
