Head's News 22/09/2017
This has been a busy week for senior school news and developments and I have been out to Dulwich College and City of London Girls’. I have had a chance to meet with senior staff and to hear about developments at these schools. I have also been able to see some former pupils. It is interesting to note that Dulwich College sits a 12 minute train ride from Victoria – much more accessible that one might imagine…
New pupils continue to settle in well and I was especially pleased with our newcomers for conducting themselves so well during our fire drills this week.
House Meetings took the place of assemblies this week and there was much strategic talk as well as voting for representative positions.
Yr 8 trip to the Holland Park Ecology Centre
The Science trip to the Holland Park Ecology Centre was highly informative and was enjoyed by all pupils. Mr Cossey noted how much the boys enjoyed getting their hands dirty – literally! The investigation involved quadrat sampling to determine the population of invertebrates in the woodland areas. Soil pH and light distribution were measured as well as soil and air temperature. Ivor was particularly thrilled with the enormous centipede he discovered and Mr Cossey mentions that the worm count was considerably up this year owing to the wet weather recently. A great day of investigation!
Year 1 ‘Out and About’
Year 1 pupils enjoyed their tour around the environs of Marylebone. Among others, they noted the eye hospital, the magistrates’ court, Marylebone station and the Landmark hotel as local features. Rudimentary mapping tasks and a consideration of who uses these places and why, completed their enquiry.
Drinks Reception for Prep parents
I am most grateful, once again, to the FOA team for the convivial PP drinks evening on Tuesday this week. Teachers and parents are able to put a face to a name and this is such an important feature as we work together to educate children.
Wishing all Abercorn families a calm and relaxing weekend.
