U13s ISA Hockey Tournament
The U13s Boys Hockey Tournament took place at Lee Valley Hockey Centre on Thursday 11th of February. It was a fabulous and special experience because our Abercorn Boys Team got to play at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. During the morning session, we played three sets of ten minute matches. Our first game was against King Alfred School. It was a touch start against a very fit and strong team. Although we lost 1-0, we took the opportunity to concentrate on playing together, just passing and then tackling. Our next two games were also hard. We played Lingfield Notre Dame and then Moffat. We lost 3-0 to each of the teams. However, we put it behind us and dug in. As the morning progressed we got stronger and more confident. Although both teams always put us under pressure we showed some good signs of increasing our runs and breaks.
We ate our lunch in the sunshine and then played two more games in the head to head play offs. The games were against St Edward’s and Stoke College. The experience of the venue was amazing, to just know that Olympic players had played where we were playing was fantastic. It was really inspiring. We learned a lot playing the other teams, especially about strength and how fast you need to be off the break and to keep building up our skills. The games were incredibly fast and to play five teams in a day like that means you need to be very fit and have a lot of stamina. One thing is for sure, we showed real heart and in the face of some really wild balls, we showed true courage!
