UCS Hockey Tournament
University College School (UCS) hosted their annual Hockey Tournament on Friday 4th of March at their grounds in Cricklewood NW2. There were four groups with three teams each taking part.
It is always a brilliant tournament and lots of fun. Abercorn were in Group 3 and we played against Berkhamsted and Hereward House schools. The tournament is divided into 3 award sections and this depends on how you do in your group. The prizes are Cup Final, Plate Final and the ‘big one’ The Shield Final.
Our group games were great and we really managed to have a good mix of forward attack and defensive play. Our confidence from this year really did show, both with the older and younger players in the team. We managed to keep a ‘clean sheet’ and also give our opponents a fright or two. Some very good play! We ended up 0-0 on both games but came away feeling we had done really well.
It was amazing because we were a really tight group and we had our first experience of the penalty shoot out stage. This was our first time to have to do this. All three teams had to field their goal keeper and a few shooters…just like a football match. Our hero of the day was Ivor, it was his first time as team goalkeeper and it was pretty pressured for him. We were all holding our breath as the first shooter came up to take the penalty. Ivor looked very cool and he dealt with it brilliantly. He came forward and attacked the shooter each time, and SAVED 4 goals which gave our team shooters a team lead. Oliver and Kamal scored for Abercorn to take us into the lead. AMAZING! We won our group and we went into the Shield Final…the hardest to get into as it was all group winners.
Our last game was against St John’s in the knock out for the Shield Final. It was as hard as we had expected and they did play brilliantly. We put up a good fight but they did beat us 5-0.
The day was a huge success and our team is getting stronger and every time we play these games and tournaments we get more experience. It is so important to do this and I think it is amazing to get the chance to play like this.
