Head's News 05/05/2017
I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend. Certainly cooler in London but the extra day gave us the feeling of a mini-break.
Yr1 & 2 Walkathon
Chilly it most certainly was, but thankfully the rain held off for the Walkathon on Wednesday. The children were very full of beans and could have kept on going all afternoon - we had to stop to get them back for pick up! Congratulations to all the Year 1s who kept up brilliantly with the Year 2s. A very worthwhile afternoon.
English Trip to Stratford upon Avon
On Thursday our Year 6 and Year 8 pupils headed off to Stratford upon Avon for a residential trip to learn more about the life and works of William Shakespeare. They are visiting Shakespeare’s birthplace and Anne Hathaway’s cottage as well as Mary Arden’s farm, to give the full flavour of life in the 16C. They attended a production of Julius Caesar last night which prompted much discussion afterwards.
Teachers report that the sun has been shining and that the children’s behaviour has been excellent. I hope today’s workshop has been equally successful.
Ms Miller has organised this trip for quite a few years now and it is a firm favourite in the calendar. Thank you to all staff involved. I look forward to hearing further details next week.
Year 3 Enterprise Week
Year 3 pupils have been selecting their dishes for Monday’s bake sale. They have been working on the financial aspects of buying ingredients in order to bake for the sale. They have considered price points and likely demand and have to make assumptions on projected sales and (hopefully!) the project will make a profit. The principal is that input costs are subtracted from sales so that pupils have a sense of the economic implications of such an undertaking. They have enjoyed the enterprise side of things but the fun starts this weekend with the donning of aprons and the baking itself. Thank you to all families involved – I hope that the children will help with the washing up and kitchen tidying! (I am often accused of being a messy chef myself…).
Visits to Francis Holland and Aldenham
This morning Miss Jack and I attended a morning meeting with senior staff at Francis Holland to hear feedback on the 11+ process and to give thoughts on our own experience of the process. I was delighted to be taken on a tour of the school by three former Abercornians who are clearly flourishing at the school.
This evening I am heading up to Aldenham School to have a tour and dinner at the school. A great opportunity to catch up on developments and hear about the progress of former pupils.
Wishing everyone a very happy and relaxing weekend.
