Assessment for Entry

Abercorn School welcomes new pupils at any stage, with appropriate assessment for entry.

Lower School

Entry into Nursery, Pre-Reception, Reception, and Year 1, is non-selective and no formal entry assessment is required. Places are offered 2-3 terms in advance of the desired start term, in registration date order.

For Year 1 applicants and above we do ask for a copy of the child's latest school/nursery report and a pupil reference where available.

Children looking to enter Year 2 will be asked to attend a taster session, where they will meet their teacher and peers, as well as undertake classwork activities that will assess their English and Maths abilities.

We are happy to arrange for the child to sit a short assessment at their current school in place of a taster day where necessary.

Senior School

If your child is looking to join Abercorn between Year 3 and Year 11, they will need to attend a taster day in school and will spend this time with a class of their current age group. This taster session provides the opportunity for your child to experience lessons and daily school life, and for our teachers to observe your child in a group environment.

We conduct our entry assessments via a platform called Atom Learning, which will test the pupil’s English, Maths, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning abilities. In addition to this, we will also conduct a short writing task.

Our entry assessments help us to assess the child's ability, so that their needs and expectations are fully considered before a place can be offered. The assessment will take place at Abercorn in a relaxed environment for your child. However, arrangements can be made for the assessment to be sat at your child's current school if you are not living in the London area.

Following this, they will also meet with the relevant Deputy Head to discuss their interests, hobbies, and favourite subjects.

We would request a pupil reference from the current school, and ask for a copy of the child's latest school report.
