School Trips

Even from the earliest age, Abercorn encourages trips outside of the school regularly throughout the school year.

These trips are be designed to hone life skills, such as how to travel safely as a group when outside of the school buildings, and to reinforce areas of learning, skill and exploration. The added enthusiasm that a visit to a relevant place can bring to a topic is immeasurable as well as building new memories, friendships and experiences that will stay with our children beyond their school days.

Examples of how trips are used to reinforce learning in the Early Years include trips to the Tate Modern, to explore further the topic of Authors and Artists, visits to Paddington Station and The London Transport Museum as part of the discovery of London topic. Trips to the Forest School also promote knowledge and awareness of the outdoor curriculum and our ecology. A theatre trip to see ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’ is an experience of a lifetime for our Reception pupils!

Trips for children in Year 1 include the Beckonscot Model Village, a trip linked to the topic of Houses and Home and Past Communities.

In Year 2 of Middle School, pupils explore the streets of London in their class groups, tracking the path of the Great Fire, and in Year 3 children visit the British Museum to reinforce their work on Ancient Egypt.

In preparation for the week long PGL residential trip in Year 4, Year 3 children go on a much anticipated overnight Bushcraft Camp.

Excursions for the older pupils continue to consolidate classroom learning and to link with current areas of study.

Year 4 and Year 5 especially look forward to their PGL residential trip for a week in the summer term where they can try their hand at a number of new exciting activities such as the zip wire, abseiling, mountain biking, and Quad Biking. The trip also includes visits to some local attractions making it one of the highlights of our children's time in this part of Abercorn.

Year 6 pupils enhance their studies of Shakespeare with a visit to Stratford upon Avon, and enjoy a residential trip to France. Similarly, Years 7 and 8 explore influences of gravitational forces in Physics at the Royal Observatory, where they experience displays of solar and lunar eclipses. Their time at Abercorn culminates in a residential trip to places such as Iceland and Pompeii.

These trips provide memories and experiences outside of the classroom and which last way beyond the school years.

“Pupils’ horizons are broadened and their intellectual and cultural experience is enriched by the advantage taken of the school’s situation in London.”
