Community spirited

From the Headmaster’s Desk: 12th May 2023

Mr Hammond

Headmaster

I have ended the day by shaking hands with most of the Senior School pupils – manners maketh man(kind). The pandemic made us all acutely aware of how important tactile greetings were to us, with fake shakes, bumping elbows all help preventing infection. Now in less unprecedented times, you might see hugging, touching foreheads and cheek kissing. These may temporarily disappear if illness strikes, but are a norm we have all enjoyed returning to.

The chance to come together, to greet and speak to each other, as a community is precious. Luckily, there are chances a plenty at Abercorn in the next few weeks.

The APA Fayre on Saturday 13th May promises stunning weather and an even better event. Food, games and a raffle are but some of the highlights. I hope to see you all there. The Fayre is swiftly followed by our Senior School Open House on Tuesday 16th May!

We are looking forward to welcoming you all to our Open House event on Tuesday 16th May, from 5 to 6:30pm at our new premises on 60 Paddington Street. The Year 6-9 children are very excited to act as tour guides and are resplendent in their role.

All families, their children and any guests you would like to bring are very welcome to attend the event. As current Abercorn families, you are more than welcome to bring more than the 2 guests stated on the form. If you would like to attend or to ask any questions in advance, please click on “sign up here” by RSVPing here.

All pupils in Years 6 and above are expected to attend the event, and will be kept at school at the end of the day to have a light sandwich tea before the event. We hope that you will attend the event, but if you are unable to attend, all children must be collected promptly at 6:30pm. If you are a family in Year 6 or above, as well as RSVPing using the link above, to give permission for your child to attend the event, please click here by Friday 12th May.

Do look ahead in the Parent Calendar – there are a huge range of exciting events taking place later in the Summer Term.

I shall close with the third in a series of reviews of the Senior School. Remember – I am always looking for volunteers (for a variety of tasks) and have a steady stream arriving at my office door. Aisha in Year 4 is the author of this week’s piece and she writes (verbatim)…

Hi, my name is Aisha, and I will be telling you what I like about Senior School.

I like Senior School because it’s huge and has lots of space. I also like the theatre because we get to sit on comfy chairs instead of the floor. We also get to meet new, kind and caring teachers. I like the Music room – it’s very nice and big. The lunchroom is big as well and has very yummy deserts. That is what I like about Senior School.

I do hope to see you on Tuesday so you can see what Aisha is talking about and whether the proof is in the pudding, or at least in the wonderful food that will be on offer.

All the best for the weekend - we must all remember to go to work and school on Monday, Mr Hammond
