For the children

From the Headmaster’s Desk: 13th October 2023

Mr Hammond

Headmaster

On behalf of the whole Abercorn community, my heart goes out to all of those suffering in the Middle East. The atrocities that have taken place are horrific – war, barbarism and hate speech are never the best answer to anything. The situation is complex and I hope that peace is achieved rapidly for the good of all of the innocent families and children who are caught up in the violence. Our thoughts and prayers go out to anyone in the Abercorn community who has family or friends caught up in the violence. Although Abercorn, and all schools, are safe places for all families, if your children are upset and you would like us to provide additional pastoral support, do let us know as usual.

Children should always be at the heart of what we do, and I was pleased to be asked to pass on the following message from the Children’s Commissioner of England this week. Please do fill in the survey if you have time:

Dear Parents and Carers,

As we approach the General Election, now is a crucial moment to take children and young people’s voices to policymakers, Government, and decision makers, to make sure they are heard. That is why I want to hear from every child and young person in England about their schools, communities, family life, and the wider world. I will also be asking what they want for their future, their hopes, dreams, and aspirations.

The Big Ambition survey is for all children and young people aged 6-18 and for parents/carers who can complete the survey on behalf of children. Adults can also assist children who are unable to complete the survey independently.

The survey can be completed here: www.childrenscommissioner.gov.uk/thebigambition

I am grateful for your ongoing support.

Yours sincerely,

Dame Rachel de Souza , Children’s Commissioner for England

Finally, back to informative and amusing children. One budding Abercorn numismatic, Sholto in Year 4, apparated in my office the other day giving tell of how he had broken into the family safe (I may have embellished the story) and found some very interesting coins. He presented a ‘cartwheel’ tuppence from 1797 and the reign of George III. The oldest coin I have ever held, it was a physically imposing piece and far larger than modern day pennies. To boot, the boy then casually presented a French coin adorned with Napoleon III (ironically a monarch); a mere 170 years old! How funny that a chance conversation with a child can remind this headmaster that the past can teach us so much and help us to look forward to the future.

All the best for a wonderful weekend! Mr Hammond
