New season, new opportunities

From the Headmaster’s Desk: 8th September 2023

Mr Hammond

Headmaster

As Formula One World Champion Fernando Alonso said: Every day, every year, every new season is a reset from the last, and you are still hungry for success, to do things better and better.

The beginning of the season is an exciting time for any sports team, and it is exactly the same for schools. Not only did our pre-season include the installation of a new playground and flooring at Lower, but the staff were privileged to hear Dr Kathy Weston speak on the important of resilience within the School community during our INSET days – developing children of character is as important as nurturing children of intellect.

There have been plenty of new signings to integrate into the squad in both the coaching and playing staff. I am delighted that there will be more cross-site working than ever before as we expand Abercorn to Year 10. In a microcosm of the School, our oldest Year Group has a mixture of experience (one boy starts his thirteenth year with us) and youth (we welcome a new joiner), with more to follow.

The Premier League (which Manchester City will win) is a few weeks old and the NFL (which the Kansas City Chiefs or the Philadelphia Eagles should win) kicks off this weekend. We are awash with fresh starts and new beginnings as teams look to improve on what they achieved last year. Liverpool must surely do better…

The above is slightly heavy on metaphor (even for me), but the point stands that (like sports teams) all schools are communities that benefit from the old and the new, the established and the novel in their relentless pursuit of excellence. Sports teams and schools are living, breathing beings that are bereft without people. School is an eerie place without children and it is wonderful to welcome them all back.

On that note, the APA are hosting their annual picnic this Sunday 10th September from 2pm to 4pm, and will give parents the opportunity to meet up with other Abercorn families and start the year off right. This will take place on Primrose Hill (near Elsworthy Terrace) and the APA will provide free ice cream and a series of fun fortune telling events for the kids, however they ask that you bring your own picnic blanket and beverages. I hope you will be able to attend!

I hope you all had a lovely summer and wish you all the best for a wonderful weekend.

All the best for the weekend! Mr Hammond
