Change is the law of life

From the Headmaster’s Desk: 21 April 2023

Mr Hammond

Headmaster

As John F Kennedy said, we should look not focus on the past and present, but to the future. I am delighted that the strategic combination of our Upper and Senior Schools has gone so wonderfully well over the holidays and it is fantastic to have Years 3-9 on one site. The children have (predictably) been a delight, an excited delight. My hat goes off to all Abercorn staff, including those at Lower, for their commitment and perseverance to making the full opening of our Senior site a roaring success. As Einstein said the measure of intelligence is the ability to change and I could not ask for a more flexible group – bravo all round.

Religious events often herald change and as Ramadan comes to an end, I hope that the Muslims in the Abercorn community have a wonderful time this evening as they mark Eid al Fitr. Before the Easter break, it was very interesting to hear our pupils’ different experiences of fasting; a challenging task that shows that to be committed is to be successful. We can learn so much from all World religious and faiths.

Talking of commitment, some mysterious posters cropped up around Senior this week. Intentionally cryptic, few instructions were given apart from to come and speak to the Headmaster. Two plucky Year 7 girls dutifully appeared at my door and, with 20 hours’ notice, presented a wonderful piece about collaboration in assembly this morning. From the mouths of babes, they were entirely self-reliant and ably supported by a Senior-Upper School duo using unusual methodology to transport a balloon across the theatre. Teamwork makes the dream work.

Much of what I would usually write in my weekly missive is contained within my beginning of Summer Term letter which will be with you shortly. This piece contains a number of important announcements and some key dates (the Coronation, Abercorn Fayre and Senior School Open House), along with a major change to the timings of our Sports Day, so please do read carefully.

I shall end with Socrates (why not?): the secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new. Abercorn is charged and ready to go – these are exciting times.

All the best for the weekend., Mr Hammond
