Into summer

From the Headmaster’s Desk: 26th May 2023

Mr Hammond

Headmaster

This year has been full of changes and new starts. From a change on the throne to the strategic combination of our Year 3 to 9 pupils at Senior School, the Summer Term has been equally full of fresh ideas. The energy is palpable and evidenced by an increasingly confident cohort of pupils.

As you know, I have a standing policy of seriously considering any requests made by any pupil in the school via handwritten letter. I am very analogue when it comes to this commitment and will be writing back to those ambitious pupils who have emailed me to request they pick up parchment and ink (or pencil). If I had not received such a request from Kimonas, I would not have started my Thursday with a game of chess, following successful delivery of the before and after school club’s new chess board. I was treated to a competitive match from Roma, who deployed a very successful defence, having chosen to bravely play as black. We did not quite have time to finish the game: to be continued…

Speaking of change, I will write to you all with a full summary of staffing in my usual end of year letter, but would like to update you with one immediate change. With Mr Macfarlane moving on from his role in Compliance and HR to a new post after half term, I am delighted to welcome Mr Giri to Abercorn. I look forward to working with Mr Giri and would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Macfarlane for all of his hard work and to wish him the best for the future.

There is no piece from the children today about Senior School, but from speaking to the children, it is clear that the move to our new site has been wildly popular. From loving the new Lab, Art room and theatre (with its comfy seats) to communal dining and socialising with older/younger peers, the views of the pupils perfectly complement the benefits that we see as staff and families.

The second half of the Summer Term is always gloriously sunny (well, nearly always) and packed full of activity. Needless to say that I am always in need for volunteers to support the School – do encourage your son or daughter to come and see me. You can see an overview of our programme on the parents’ calendar, but please also keep an eye out for event-specific communication for any residential trips (Years 3 and above) and the following:

·       Matilda (our Year 5 and 6 Play), Tuesday 13th June

·       Year 4-9 Prize Giving, Friday 23rd June

·       Senior Sports Day, Monday 3rd July

·       Sports Dinner, Tuesday 4th July

·       Lower School Sports afternoon, Wednesday 5th July

What a way to end the year!

All the best for a relaxing half term! Mr Hammond
