As Head of English Ms Shuttleworth plays a vital role in encouraging a school wide love of literature both in and beyond the classroom.

“From an early age, I experienced my mother, who was a deputy head at a special needs school, preparing resources and discussing educational matters at the dinner table. Both my sister and I who were prone to going against our mother’s advice, decided to pursue a career in education (!)”

Ms Shuttleworth was educated at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School and went on to spend a year in Vietnam teaching English to students between the ages of 16 and 60. On returning to the UK she completed a degree at Sheffield University. Taking advantage of the long university holidays, Ms Shuttleworth spent time teaching in an orphanage in Ghana, working in a special needs playgroup and caring for children on a yacht in the south of France.

After completing her degree, she participated in a year long internship at the Chicago International Children’s Film Festival, developing a children’s media literacy curriculum. Inspired by her experience overseas, she went on to the University of Cambridge to study for a PGCE in KS2 and 3 English.

In 2008 Ms Shuttleworth moved to the U.S. to teach at Abercorn’s sister school, The British International School of New York where she taught English to Years 4,7,8 and 9.

As a passionate educator, Ms Shuttleworth took part in professional development programs in Portland, Oregon, Puerto Rico, New York, qualifying as a middle school debate judge and coach and joined Harvard’s Graduate School of Education where she worked on producing a series of class-based practical research projects that focused on pedagogy. In addition, she developed and delivered a professional course for teachers spanning over 4 weeks in San Andres, Colombia which looked at initiating a literacy curriculum in schools on the island. Ms Shuttleworth returned to the UK in 2016 to teach English at Abercorn School where she has played a vital role in English and instilling a love of learning and literature in our pupils.
