Head of Classics and French Teacher

Ms Sharpe encourages pupils to understand the world around them by exploring languages and cultures past and present.

Susan studied Modern and Medieval Languages at Jesus College, Cambridge, originally specialising in German before branching out more widely into European literature, history and philosophy. Joining Abercorn in 1993, originally on a part time basis, Susan later gained Qualified Teacher Status whilst working for the school.

For several years, alongside teaching, Susan worked as French-English translator for a Network of Human Rights NGOs working on Europe-North Africa issues. Meanwhile she completed a course in phonetics and contributed to the Microsoft Encarta Dictionary. For four years Susan also worked for the film section of Time Out Magazine, reviewing foreign films amongst others, and interviewing stars such as Audrey Tautou when she played the world-famous Amélie.

Susan is inspired by human communication and storytelling and enjoys using literature and myth to explore big themes in engaging and age appropriate ways. Susan believes that all learning is connected and that teaching is about helping pupils to make sense of a very complicated world. She sets ambitious but achievable goals, adopting rigorous methods with drama and humour. If something isn’t working, Susan is always open to trying something else.

When asked what she likes most about teaching; “Every day is both familiar and surprising. I really enjoy developing new games and activities, fine tuning all the details in practice with the children - who have lots of good ideas and help to drive the process”.
